Parking...which are we?

On our first trip out we passed through Lyme Regis. Nice place to visit and glad we stopped to have a look about. We used the car park at the top of the hill and this was the parking charges sign.




My question is, what are us demountables? Not a motorhome really as I fitted ( well just over ) in to a normal car space and the motorhome spaces where much too big. Also my pick up is not a commercial size van.

Anyone got any ideas? Also same thing for if we was booking a space on a ferry to go to France or Holland, as we are not a caravan nor as big as a motorhome.

I go case by case personally, If (As last month) I encounter a jobsworth who sauntered across his car park as I was backing into a car parking space,
He was insistent it was a car park and ours a motorhome, it was the end of a long drive & we'd stopped off to shop, ordinarily I indicate its a car and walk off,
this time the space was limited, a queue was building up, and I'd decided He was going to ring his warden mate before i'd locked the doors.

while on this subject when a campsite ask what sort of camper Its always 'Toyota camper' and leave it at that,
campsite are like insurance brokers, any deviation from the norm causes alarm and despondency

Know it been mentioned here before in connection with tolls and ferries too. Givem a parking ticket for parking in 'car' area would surely be like ticketing a car-based van for not parking with transits though wouldn't it?

OK. so what about Severn bridge? Pickups are commercial at double the price of a motorhome.

Ooo the severn bridge tolls were the bane of our lives when we had our demountable ! we wrote to them to explain that the pick-up was indeed a commercial vehicle, but once the demount was attached it could only be classed as a motorhome for domestic and social use. We even called in at their offices at the side of the bridge where it had an inspection by two employees who were impressed with it and agreed we were not using it commercially, but we still had to pay the top rate as the DVLA had it registered as a pick up. Watching massive RVs and huge car & caravan combos going through for £6 was a bit gutting, but just occasionally we were waved on with a grin and a nod from an enlightened toll person.

sympathise with the bridge actually, but its still early days and with so few in UK this sort of thing is going to be with us awhile I'm afraid

I suspect that some I win, some I lose - so I don't worry about being charged as one thing or another because I figure that for every time I am charged as a more expensive vehicle, the opposite is probably true elsewhere.

I've never had a problem in a car park, and have used the sneaky narrow width of the truck to allow me to park in town car parks that a regular van-based camper would have no chance at.

For ferries and campsites, where I am asked in advance, I just tell them "motorhome, less than 6m" - it just gets confusing if you start trying to describe what it really is and risk people concluding that it isn't something they should be allowing. Sally used to try to describe it as a "Ford Ranger with an American truck camper on the back" - once I told her to use the above terminology instead she got on a lot better booking campsites .

Exactly, this was the case in filtering out travellers "Transit & caravan' would set the bells ringing
just say (insert make of truck here)- camper

makes life a hell of lot easier
