OK. Next question is what should I use to coat and protect the wood I've replaced which is underneath (exposed) the camper? The original? coating seems to be like black stone chip paint you'd use on lower vehicle panels? I've applied preserver and primer already but advice welcome.

We bought an Apollo in August which we discovered rot through a dent in the back. The seller didn't mention anything about it. Have a look at our posts on Winter projects and member Mike has a thread 'oh no what has happened' which could help.
As we have an Apollo we got the parts direct and they were very helpful.

We used Cuprinol fence preserver on our new base. Should be ok as the board we've used is similar to marine ply. Previous stuff looked like bitumen.

Mine doesn't have anything much actually I suspect its something of a preservative by the feel of it, certainly not tactile like a bitumen,
camper on truck is on the bed of truck all except the tail end (over fresh air) but doesn't get a lot of abuse from road spray etc

Thanks all. I suspect I'm going a bit belt and braces in an attempt to avoid future rot. I think that decent paint over the primed wood might suffice. As has been said the tail shouldn't get too much road muck thrown at it.

And depending on vehicle you may get away without removing tailgate, just dropping it open and camper might sit neatly in bed like that & even more underside protected/supported

some hilux & Nissan do this, others requite tailgate off (couple of bolts usually)

agree yes its always difficult to gauge any problems when you buy these things. Anyway sounds like you have got the repairs underway. When I replaced the wood on mine I gave it a couple of coats of water sealer before anything else, which I hope would help just in case any water gets in there again, which I hope it doesn't!
