Cheers zildjian,
I'll look at the Mazda options a bit more, I think from a glance they're the same body as the ford ranger?
I've a long standing love/hate relationship with landrovers following years of ownership.. Definitely looking at pastures new.

What is it for you that stands out about hilux's? I know older models are pretty bombproof, can't say I know much about newer models

Cheers

I concur what Zildjian has just said about cornering etc. I normally leave a nice big gap to vehicles in front of me, using the 3 sec rule & cruise on the motorway at approx 60 - 65 depending on how the traffic is. Any more than this & you'll pay for it even more in the pocket

The saving grace for me is that when you pull up on a site, drop the rear legs & plug in the electric.
Then set the chair up outside & crack a can open :P :P :P

Just wanted to add that i have purchased a Nissan Navara Acenta 190 King Cab about a year ago on An 11 plate & on the on board readout return 43.5 mpg but in real life, brim to empty get 40.5 mpg but i do love my Hyperdriving.

I have owned an old L200, an Isuzu, both double cabs but didn't own a Demountable then. I really rate the Isuzu after 150k miles. Bit the bullet with a very old Skool Mazda B2200 & unknown Outfit & after five years of ownership, decided i Love the whole concept so got the Nissan as a long term project to purchase a newer Demountable after selling the other set up to someone else who wants to try the concept on a budget.

I, like you, will be quizzing everyone at the Social about everything. Can't wait.

the whole 'What's Best' thing with trucks is such a broad subject.

The first consideration is budget.. If you have unlimited funds then HiLux or VW Amarok should be your first port of call.

Whats most important, fuel economy? if not look at petrol American trucks. Tough but expect sub 10MPG

If money (or you!) are tight, then you need to employ some lateral thinking. Look at unusual brands - No mention of Isuzu Rodeo here, well known to be absolutely bullet proof, and lower used price as they aren't on the standard 'google' list so slip through the net.
The downside is that owners don't part with them until well into the the mid 200K mile bracket though...Not many electronic toys - A good thing for me, but buyers like stuff to press these days.

Also look for alternative 'badge engineering' exercises.

I bought my Chevrolet very cheaply compared with the identical year Rodeo as the dealer couldn't market it in his usual way (actually didnt have a clue what it was) so it sat around for 30+ days and was discounted off as per their sales strategy.

Ford = Mazda - Isuzu = Chevrolet/Holden - Toyota = VW (Older models)

on Mazda...

4,703 of their cars were recovered from the partly capsized cougar ace

the cars had been at 60 degree angle for some time though 'looked perfectly OK
Mazda took the decision to scrap all of them rather than run the risk of litigation within period of warranty and here's how it was achieved.

I haven't actually loaded the camper onto my L 200 yet :!: I get the Ironman suspension and airbags fitted on Monday. Still need to finally resolve fitting turnbuckles to eyebolts mounted in new brackets welded to chassis.
So can't comment on handling yet.

We often use this website http://vans.honestjohn.co.uk/ to see what's good or bad. Quite a few pick ups are listed. Click on Reviews and select the manufacturer.

Thanks again everyone for the replies so far, I've also had a few pm's with members going into quite a lot of detail which I really appreciate.

I thought I'd narrowed it down following some of the great advice that's been given, but have been thrown another curveball so I'm back to square one.

I initially thought I'd be looking at double cabs ( like a lot of people the attraction to demountables was partly the opportunity to reduce my current two car setup to one and so I wanted an 'all rounder' ) i keep reading however how single cabs are superior for weight distribution-which is completely understandable, and after some hard thinking concluded that a crew/ super/ extra cab would suit my needs and yet still be a much better set up.

Great I thought, that's one decision closer, however....

Some of the pickups I'd been researching don't seem to come in this option or if they do they're very rare, so Isuzu which was temporarily top of my list now has a massive question mark, and more importantly, many of the second hand demountables I'm seeing look like they'd only fit on a double cab!!

Back to the drawing board haha
Bests
