Hi Steve & Bev.
We have just been through the process. Initially thought we might get what we wanted secondhand, but have ended up ordering new from Golum in Wales.
We visited Apollo, Northstar, Lely and Tischer/SKarrosser dealers in this country and a number of secondhand sellers. Very interesting process, and each person we spoke to moved us closer to deciding what we wanted, while at the same time generating many more questions. Most useful though were visits to a few of the group members who were very willing to give us time and answer stupid questions.
Everyone has their own take on what makes the perfect camper. Coming from boats, we knew what made a comfortable place to stay, but translating that into the more compact space of a camper was the question.
Must haves for us included both ends of the body: decent cooking facilities and a good toilet. Getting an oven seems to be an issue with most makes of camper - we have ended up specifying one but even with much help from Golum it has needed numerous expensive mods to get it fitted in (but perhaps you are happy without one).
The biggest question for us was around the size, weight and handling of the camper. We want to sneak into camping spots in the middle of nowhere and wanted small and light (relatively speaking) without compromising too much on the previously mentioned must haves. Putting a camper onto the back of a pickup is always going to be up against the physical capabilities of the truck and you will read much on the site here about issues around strapping the camper on so that it doesn't tear itself off going over rough ground and tweaking the suspension on the truck to make it lollop around less.
We hope we have made the right choices; we'll find out in due course.
Good luck with the search and ask away.
Graham & Jacky.
