Hi,
I have just discovered demountable campers in the last few weeks and looking into them.
Having sold my Defender and looking to sell the touring caravan I was looking at motorhomes.
I can tow the caravan, but not confident in backing it if I meet a tractor and trailer on a lane. My late husband used to do the fiddly manouvers and I was quite happy doing a bit of towing to spell him on a long run. I like small CS sites tucked away on farms and back lanes.
Options initially were to buy a motorhome and keep the Isuzu Dmax doublecab truck as well or a 4x4 motorhome and sell the truck. Sad option. ☹
I found a lot of motorhomes within my price range were awful when you checked the mot on the gov site even from dealers despite owners and dealers claims to how good they were. Ones that were not too big and would get up the track to a piece of woodland I own were pricey. The pay load on a lot of motorhomes was rather low when the dogs and I weigh 170kg together before we put in any supplies etc.
Keeping 2 vehicles doubles costs too.
I spotted a demountable truck camper on Ebay. All the advantages of a motorhome when driving, but demount it on a camping site for all the advantages of a caravan.
The one I spotted wasn't suitable for my Isuzu dmax double cab, but I found one that was on a specialist dealers site. After its basic weight was took off the Isuzu's payload it still left plenty of weight allowance for the essential supplies and the unessential ones too.
Cheaper than a motorhome of the same age and no double vehicle costs. I might have to sacrifice the canopy on the truck and go for a soft cover for the bed as it could be a struggle taking the hard canopy on and off on my own. I must admit I have never tried taking it off since it was fitted.
Going to see the demountable on Wednesday to see if it will work for me. 🙂

Off hand I don't know the size of rear bed on Isuzu but given the number of the campers come up for sale in Europe along with D-Max

Search; Isuzu in sales thread

it doesn't seem they are much different to most other pickups, I must take a look at one and measure tub

Most owners, like yourself would rather avoid buying a dedicated motorhome together with its insurance, Tax & servicing,
instead buying a comfy pickup can be used on its own and just load camper at weekends, you might get a roller locking cover or a simple tonneau to keep weather out,
I have a canopy but use the tractor to lift it on/off which is cheating I know :)

The truck had a mountain top roller when we bought it. Trouble is this one is not waterproof. I don't know if its supposed to be like that, but its a nuisance. Also the big roller mechanism at the end takes up a lot of the load space. It weighs a ton as well.
I have a nice canopy on now that I got from an Isuzu and John Deer tractor dealer. It was new old stock so half price to clear. They even fitted it for me and took the mountain top off and stashed it in the back in the price.

I think Mark here had a mountain top and mentioned the weight, he had hoped to modify so that it could stay in place with camper fitted but I know it was a problem, ordinarily I only have canopy fitted in Winter weather and just leave it off all the rest of the time,
longer its on there the more junk gets stashed in truck anyway
something else if you're considering weight properly, when camper is fitted I usually drop the tailgate off truck,
one it allows camper to go a few inches further forward
and
two tailgate is quite a chunk of weight

and three you might get a camper on and leave tailgate just dropped down flat, but its paint is susceptible to anything like stone chippings off road surface flying about

mine (hilux) is a couple of bolts and then two multi pin plugs for brakelight and reversing camera

Isuzu Dmax Fury 2015 payload is 1072kg with the tailgate on.
The camper I am looking at is 650kg which leaves 422kg - (170kg the dogs and I) leaves 252kg. If I can leave the tailgate on it will help, as an arthritic 67 year old I find lumping chunks of metal around getting harder. I will probably make a padded waterproof shield out of balistic nylon to fit over the tailgate when down to protect it.

I know what you mean about covers on the back. At the moment there is 4 empty water carriers, 2 chainsaws, 2 spades and a mattock, 3 grocery travel boxes, a 3 way cool box, dog food bin that I can think of in there. I keep telling myself its less to put back in next time I go down the wood. 🤷‍♀️

Northstar are a tried and tested product, essentially design is unchanged and they do fit D-max.

Greg at Niche marketing has been importing them for many years and can advise on the tailgate, I'm bound to remove mine as the camper has a grey water tank mounted far back on underside which tailgate would just hit

I had an appointment at around 2pm today to see the Northstar 600S. I got to Manby around 1pm after a 3hr drive, then set the satnav to find a pub for lunch. I went to 3 within a few miles it came up with. One looked like it was being turned into a house. One was totally closed up and one looked like it was still a pub in a small village nearby, but not open at lunchtime. ☹
I went back to Manby Park were the demountable place was and at the entrance to the business park was a cafe. Good menu, but by that time it was 1:40. I had a scone and coffee there to tide me over.
The 600S was a bit small and the layout wouldn't have worked for me. They had a slightly larger Northstar and a Ranger demountable that would have been better for me, but already sold. It was good to see what they are actually like and Greg at Niche RV answered my list of questions, so I have a better idea what the specifications are too and the different ways of fastening them to the truck.
Nightmare driving back. There was an accident somewhere ahead on the A46 near Lincoln. Crawled up the road till we got to an island where traffic was diverted onto a small side road through tiny villages. Unfortunatley this was happening both ways and a regular occurence of 2 big lorries trying to get passed each other on small back roads was creating caos. Then we crawled to a halt. Stop, start for ages. A long while later we got to some crossroads where there was work going on and 4 way traffic lights set up. ☹
After we got passed that things speeded up, but the 3hr journey there took 4.5hrs coming back.

Well you have now actually seen them and got an idea if suits your needs, and best to start somewhere professional, lots of people see one on sale, tear off to view/buy it before someone else gets there,
and sometimes have a bad experience with wrong design or worse still an Apollo.

Shame you had the traffic, expect some of it was people off to coast in beautiful weather today
