New to Demountables

Hi,
My wife and I are getting near to retiring and want to go touring around, we have been looking at pickups
and so far have three we like the L200, Dmax and Hilux.
We both rely like the new mk5 L200, but some people say they are no good for a demountable as the cabin is
to far back over the rear wheels.
I have been looking for a demountable camper for a l200 but there does not appear to be many.
I am new to all this, so any advice/recommendations would be appreciated.
The site is great, and I am sure I have only scratched the surface as to the info available.
Thanks, in anticipation.

Hello and welcome, glad you've found site helpful
an L200 will carry a camper but you're correct in what you've found about cab/loadbed length they are a little short where the weight of camper will sit.
The very ideal is probably single cab and long camper but realistically a king cab with two fold down rear seats are popular
and lastly a regular crewcab is what most of us end up with!

if you especially wanted an L200 friendly camper you'd need to buy in France or Germany as a great many campers were sold with Mitsubishi in mind as a carrier

Gareth & Sophie Here

presently run an L200 (ex-farm truck) with a Swedish SKarosser camper and that works well although coincidentally are about to buy Isuzu as a more modern truck

Lastly I can't emphasise highly enough glancing over our buyers guides and possibly print off the appropriate one and take along when viewing a used camper!

Hi & a Welcome from me too.

Most people have a Double cab as their base vehicle, by far the biggest part of the market but it all depends on how many people are to use the De-mountable at any time which is maybe a better way to choose the base truck?

Hi,
I’m fairly new to demountable ownership myself and having had engine trouble with the ford ranger I had, we have now brought an L200. Through work we make our way through the ranges of pickups so I get to compare and I’d say the Mitsubishi compares well although perhaps not the most refined meaning It’s not the truck I’d pick as work vehicle as you can have a nicer ride in other more expensive trucks but I found it to be the most justifiable when I came to buying it out of my own pocket.

As for the camper I have only used it a couple of times so far but find it drives well and I haven’t seen anything concerning yet. We have no chassis reenforcment carried out and just take the logical precautions such as having the weight forward when traveling. I also found airbags to be essential I drove it home without them and decided about 50miles in that I would be buying them.

Hope this helps.
Tom

Another newish member here as well :) have you been watching the (campers for sale) section as if its a Mitsubishi you wanted there are a fair few on sale already on L200 but they would be all left hand drive?

Hi Tom

It's great that you got your De-mountable, what did you settle on in the end?

Mike

PS. We chatted on the phone about insurance

Hi Mike,

Good to hear from you again, we ended up buying the Polar 4.0 Golum had for sale at NSR. We have been very pleased with it so far although we only picked it up just over a month ago and have only used it couple of times so far.
