Insurance (and getting it over the phone) is an almost weekly bitch here TBH

very few brokers or Companies know what these campers are, and frankly if the first thing they ask is
"how many axles are there and is a tracker fitted?" you might as well hang up and save your breath,

Campton however know exactly what you need in most cases and offer a reasonable rate.

I can imagine, when speaking with CCC, the lady didn't know what they were, fortunately, having read a previous thread on here regarding insurance, I was ready for the how many axels does it have question (they didn't ask for a tracker), when I explained, she had a word with her supervisor, so wasn't a problem. Even at 4x4 tyres, when I asked if they had any tyres with a greater load on a 19 rim, just in case, he asked why, I tried to explain, so he googled it!!

I haven't tried Campton, only because I read that they only insure both camper and truck, but worth getting a quote for future reference,

Hi Gazza
I'm running an Amarok with 19" Continental tyres.
The Load rating on the tyre is 1090Kg which should be OK unless you want to re-plate the truck up from 3170 to 3500.
I'm leaving the tyres on for the minute - but I realise that they aren't going to be the best for off-road. I might try and pick up a set of secondhand 17" wheels if I feel the need.

Incidentally, when looking for tyre pressures for a full load, the handbook on the Amarok says "look on the sticker on the car" and the tyres say "look on the car". So the sticker says increase from 2 bar to 3 bar.

Hi Toshbins
that is good news, same as what I have on mine, I had forgotten about a re-plate, if I am going to buy some ATs then it may be worth looking at a set of wheels and tyres with that in mind. Glad to see there are some Amarok owners on here :-)

Found this interesting formula on a caravan site today to calculate correct tyre pressure
Max tyre pressure / load rating of the tyre (65psi / 1150) =0.0565.
1150 is the rating for a 113 rated tyre

Weight on rear axle in my case is 1820 /2 = 910kg
So 0.0565 x 910 =51.41psi
I have been running at 60psi may be too much

For front using the same formula and my weight if 1060kg pressure comes out at 29.9psi I've been running 40psi, it does feel a bit light I must say so may I might drop a bit.

Would be interested to know if anyone else has a formula

Interestingly, the max pressure marked on our tyres is 51psi, which is what we're running at.

Hi Mike

Thanks for the formula. I thought i would compare my current set up to what is suggested?

Max tyre pressure/load rating (44psi/950kg) = 0.0463

Rear axle 1700/2 = 850
0.0463 x 850 = 39.36psi

I have been running at 44psi as i thought it best to run at the Max tyre pressure.

Front axle 1000/2 = 500
0.0463 x 500 = 23.15psi

But using 35psi on the front.

NOTE - My Mitsubishi L200 4x2 Single cab should have 185R x 14 tyre/steel wheel OEM but has been fitted with after market 16 inch alloy's with 235/70 tyres. I used these numbers in the formula, i know the different wheel/tyre set up affects the speedo reading but does it also the tyre pressures?

I'am going to try 23psi on the front & 39psi on the rear and see how it changes the 'feel' when driving?

I hope the formula works keep an eye on pressure and visual look of the tyre plus temp. I'm getting a bit obsessed with pressure
Just realised after 40 years of driving that observed pressure with a load is different when pressure is with out load. I.expect pup up to say 30 with out load and then when loaded pressure has increased to say 40 psi. I guess we should only adjust pressures when loaded may be stating the obvious but it's just dawned on Me!!!!!

I've found the same with the airbags. If you pump them up before loading the camper, you will find the pressure has increased once the weight of the camper is on.
