Thanks for finding them . The size is close enough . I suppose I would only need to fit them the the back ? I think I have an extra spare wheel , which would give me a set of off road and road tyres . I will look into it ,.

I put this question on the Ford Ranger forum. It seem a number of people are using 265 70 15 wheels and tyres on the 2x4 . They are 13.4% bigger ! I don't like the sound of that.

Wouldn't be giving me a warm fuzzy feeling either. My Jeep Wrangler is running tyres about that much bigger than standard and you really wonder where all its 180 bhp went. I wonder what that size increase would be like with a 109 bhp engine (assuming you don't have the 84bhp version :o ) due to the increased gearing.

Question is - are those people running those tyres using their trucks at full payload? Probably not.

I guess those 265s are the tyres fitted as standard to the 4x4 model of the same year as yours. But certainly in the 2007 model I have, the 4x4 has a lower final drive ratio to the 4x2, probably to handle the larger diameter tyres. I expect yours is also the same - so just because the 4x4 runs a certain size of tyres doesn't mean the 4x2 will run them comfortably. Expect a noticeably reduction in performance and fuel economy.

Previous Hilux ran oversize tyres, looked great and rode well but fuel and acceleration suffered as a result,

I have had BFG All terrains on a number of Landrovers for years, generally exceeded 70000 miles per set so well worth the slightly higher initial cost. 235/85/16 on a Landrover 130.

Hi
I will soon be picking up my first demountable (2007 SKarosser 6L) on a double cab VW Amarok. I want to buy a set of AT tyres but am limited to what I can have due to the 19 inch wheels fitted as standard
Currant tyres - continental 255/55/R19 loading 1090Kg

Available options in the same size from 4x4 tyres
General grabber AT loading 111 -1090kg
Cooper Zeon LTZ loading 111 – 1090Kg max pressure 50psi

Weights of Amarok
Gross vehicle weight 3170kg
Unladen weight 2093kg
Max Payload 1077kg
Front axel weight (1) - 1425kg
Rear axel weight (2) – 1860kg

I was looking at the BF T/A K02 tyres but they don’t do them in 19inch rims, the closest I can get on an 18 rim is 265/60/R18 loading 119 – 1360kgs. Don’t really want to buy new wheels unless I have to!!

or is there a company who can advise on wheels/tyres suitable for a demountable? when I spoke with 4x4 tyres they did know what I was on about!!

thanks

Gary

Hi Gary,

This is what I would do:

Before you collect your camper, look at the load information on your current tyres and pump the rear tyres up to whatever pressure the sidewall says gives you maximum load capacity - it will be more than the instructions on the truck, but the pressure instructions on the tyre take precedence over the truck.

When you collect your camper, keep the speed down to 60mph or lower - the higher the speed, the more heat builds up in tyres and it is the heat that kills the tyres. Same is true of running tyres at lower pressure - causes more heat build up.

Once you have the camper, load it up with stuff, full tank of water, propane, diesel and find a weight bridge. Most important is the rear axle weight, but you might as well get the front axle weight as well while there.

You can then see what your rear axle weight actually is and therefore what tyre rating you need. From that you can decide if the 111 rated tyres are sufficient, or you need to change the wheels to get higher rated tyres.

It is a bit annoying that VW are selling a 4x4 pickup truck with large wheels and low profile tyres. That is the opposite of what you need on a vehicle that goes offroad, but I guess they have realised that people are more interested in the sporty look than the actual abilities.

Hi Steve

thank you for your reply, I will go and find a weigh bridge when I have the demountable, it is frustrating but you are right, I just can't see how a truck can be Sporty!! good advice on keeping the speed down as well, It will be a long drive home!!
Thanks again Steve

Hi David

I will go to a weighbridge as Steve suggested, if it makes no sense I shall repost, which is highly likely!! I still have insurance running on the truck, I have had a company vehicle for years, so wanted to get some no claims in!! (tempting fate now) so I have gone with the CCC, insuring the demountable only, as soon as the truck insurance runs out I will contact Compton,

thanks for letting me know

Gary
