Nissan Navara D22 and D40 - identification

Post: # 10902Post Marcle_Leisure

Hi Guy's,

I'm looking for an easy way to identify which is which (D22 or D40). What are the cosmetic differences?

I know I can use the registration date as a guide, however when they're registered on the change over date (2004/2005).

I know on the D40 the rear axle is mounted below the leaf springs, but unsure if the axle is above or below the springs on the D22.

Thanks in advance

Apart from the D22 being the one on the side of the road in a pile of oil and broken con rod splinters

The D40 is wider, squarer, and looks larger and more American in my opinion (though both are very good looking trucks). I think they look clearly different, but describing those differences is difficult.

However, the D22 has a cutout in the rear wheel arch extension for the fuel filler, where-as the D40 has a filler cap which is moulded to the shape of the wheel arch extension. Also the rear side windows on the D22 are rectangular, but on the D40 Nissan have added a stylish 45 degree angle on the rear bottom corner - i.e. the window line kinks up at the back.

Hi if your thinking of buying a navara recomend the nissan navara forum in uk loads of info their about the pros and cons of those trucks.. I did have an early D22 with the older version of the engine seemed pretty bulit proof but later ones did have con rod issues. D40 I believe have some flywheel and clutch issues but all motots have some problems.

Hi Mike,

I'm not looking for a Navara. Its just that I've paid for advertising on this forum, so thought I'd post my questions here first. I sell a lot of air suspension kits for the rear of campers and obviously pick-ups, however like motorhome/camper owners, many owners of Navara's don't know what model they own, so was looking for an easy way to quickly identify what model they have by looking at the bodywork as age and log book/reg. docs don't always identify the specific model. So if a vehicle was registered in 2005, ideally it should be a D40, however it can also be built in 2004 and not registered till 2005, so could be a 2004 D22.

Following your tip, I will pop over to your link to see what help they can offer.

All the best.

Hi - Andy Peak should pick this up when he gets home - he's the forum Navara (and food) expert.
I have just pointed a Navara owner in your direction for their 2006 Navara for a basic air kit.

In the mean time web pages like this one below could be useful if the VIN number is available

The D22 and D40 are very different. You couldn't mix them up.

The D22

The Mk1 D40

It's much harder telling the difference between the Mk1 and Mk2 D40's. A slight face lift to the Mk2.

Then you have the NP300

Thanks for the vin site link, very useful.

Thanks also for the photos.

Looks like the D22 has a sort of power bulge air intake in the centre-ish of the bonnet, and its curved over the headlights, where as the D40 has no visible air vent in the bonnet and its more or less straight over the headlights.

Clearly you couldn't mix them up, however I've had several owners who clearly do not know what they have.

Thanks

Looks like the fuel tank filler is on opposite sides, that'll be an easy question to ask :)

RH - D22
LH - D40

Datsun/Nissan show the model derivative within the chassis number.
From memory its the 7th, 8th & 9th characters.
