For those with (or contemplating getting) an Amarok we've just weighed our Amarok Highline auto empty (with full fuel as per VW's calculations).

VW states the unladen weight as 2093kgs. Ours is 2160kgs. I wonder why?
We also checked the rear axle weight (vehicle empty) - 980kgs. The limit is 1860 kgs

So - we've got 880 kgs to play with on the rear axle which isn't much. The air suspension goes on soon and we may well then get our 'plated' limits increased.

We spoke to the guys at SVTech last week and from the top of his head, Graham said the Amarok can be replated to 3,500kg GVW and the rear axle up to 2,230kg so that would give more than enough extra for camper and 'stuff' inside it (subject to airbags being fitted and the right tyres).

Going to chase them up tomorrow as we haven't heard anything since sending the application off...

We've just been to the weigh bridge with the skarosser EC6l and a ford ranger - we came in at 2980 leaving a whopping 40kg for little me! Even if I starve for a month I don't think I've weighed that since I was 8…

A full tank of fuel and empty of water means that the 40kg of crap I removed will be replaced with the weight of water. I think we might have to look to uprate too. Did they give any idea of cost?

I spoke to Graham at SV Tech. They do not need to see the vehicle. They need the following:
Their form filled out (I'm awaiting that).
A copy of the V5 vehicle registration document.
The invoice for the purchase of the air suspension including fitting if you had a specialist do that.
Photos of the kit fitted to the vehicle (if you DIY).
An official weight ticket for the vehicle - although he said this was not essential.

There may also be requirements re. suspension and tyres. I can only comment on our Amarok which already has the heavy duty suspension and 112 rated tyres.

The whole process should take about 14 days.
More info - call SV Tech on 01772 621800. Hurry now to avoid the rush? I know someone who has gone through this process with SV Tech and had to chivvy them along - if you get my drift!

We've removed the side bars on our Amarok - total weight 22 kgs.
We've removed the back seat - too difficult to weigh but I reckon around 25 kgs - a whole heap of room there now - more than enough for the dog, cat, beer, etc.
Mrs. Wild has stopped me removing the trim and carpets. The tail gate may be next.

Incidentally, has anyone encountered any problems re. insurance after having fitted air suspension? It's a modification to a standard vehicle and therefore a requirement for us to notify our insurers, Admiral. They're going to get back to me.

Happy dieting, Chris

Thanks Chris for that, tailgate is another 20K less and you WILL notice the difference in handling as result,

air ride (with Campton at least) I notified together with the other components (compressor/tank etc) installed as they added up and need including,
they accepted installation with thanks for telling them
but didn't change premiums

Overloaded trucks

I guess all our trucks are near their Mam (maximum allowed mass) so as part of my musings on a new pickup of the toyota type I rang SV tech.

It turns out its not a big problem to get the Mam of a hilux to 3500kg. You will need airbag assisted suspension, suitable load rated tyres and pay sv tech 260+vat for the paperwork and plates

So it may be a good idea for FinAde to give them a ring and see if they have tested the VW yet and if it can be uprated, i'm not sure you want to load another 500kg but it does give you peace of mind if VOSA come sniffing

Hi Rich
We sent our application to SV Tech last week :) Waiting to hear back on progress. The VW can be replated to 3500kg.
