Camper "on" Amarok (finally :D)
Camper "on" Amarok (finally :D)
Ok, the day we've been waiting for. The Apollo sitting on the back of the Amarok. First, a look back at how we got here
Collected from London, driven back to Somerset on the underpowered 113bhp L200, no airbag suspension
Externally (see other project threads for internal repairs) - no rear lights, dent by the toilet cassette door. Removed the side panel which revealed wet rot. Initially not thought of as too bad, but unfortunately it had spread underneath and into the opposite side, meaning the rear supports had to be replaced along with a section of the base.
Rotten wood replaced with hardwood
Rear base section replaced with marine ply, trim straightened and fixed back in place
New fibreglass panel purchased from Apollo. Doesn't match but looks a lot nicer than it did
New LED lights on the back
And finally loaded onto the Amarok...
Ok so it took four hours from taking off the tonneau cover to successfully lowering the camper onto the truck - mainly because the truck bed is 3 inches deeper than the Apollo so it will need a frame to raise it up - for practice a pile of wood was used, and as expected the cab is 1 inch higher than the overhang, this will also be corrected by the frame. Strapping in down is the next challenge but the chassis is a pretty hefty one so no problem here, although the rear load hooks are not accessible once the camper is on board so thinking caps on again. Oh and the tailgate doesn't have to be removed, although the straps might have to be extended a little

Looking good! Rather jealous of that Amarok.
We have the inverse problem, our trucks buck is too low/camper base is too high - although it isn't an issue other than it just looks wrong -
Looks like it's plonked on top rather than fitted nice and low

Re: Camper "on" Amarok (finally :D)
I would definitely get a shallow laundry box for that if it was mine,
look in on a music shop & ask what flightcases they have,
in the past I owned a really shallow on for expo displays and I know you could get something.
Finade's could probably be dropped a bit lower on wooden frame/blocks, mine fits closely on cab roof (probably 2-3" gap)
that apart they must be feeling pretty good about it for next year

Yes the frame will be an inch lower than what we tested it on.
Just need electrics and airbag suspension for the truck and we're good to go.
Loads of little jobs still to be done but nothing stopping us actually using it now
