Winter hobby needed
Winter hobby needed
So the camper's parked up, (I reckon I'm utterly justified now as the clocks go back shortly)
might have been a bit hasty restoring pick-up to truck and hold off a little longer next year,
anyway,
got my photography, like woodwork of course, but might take up a new interest over Winter but needs:
minimal outlay,
fits around my weekends,
doesn't involve a lot of travel,
maybe can walk dogs at same time somehow,
got any ideas team?

Re: Winter hobby needed
Geocaching , you can walk the dogs and treasure hunt at the same time, all you need is smartphone with gps technology and an app. Outlay around 15 quid for membership
Its actually something you can do even when away in the camper and its a really good way of getting to know areas

eg the cemetry in Paris where they buried many of the victims of the Concorde disaster, the pub in the soap series "Emerdale", one placed in full view of l'Arc de Triomphe which has survived several years without being muggled.
we've geocached in about nine countries and thoroughly enjoyed it

Re: Winter hobby needed
You go hunting for caches, they could be as big as a lunch box or as small as a 35mm film cannister.
The prize is the find , sometimes you can take something out but you must replace it with something else
One near me proved a real pig to find, its called 'bolted' and thats what it is a magnetized bolt on some steelwork
Take a pen to sign the logbook on most finds.
They can be difficult to find ,sometimes requiring multiple visits to the area
There is something similar they do on the west country moors and lundy island called letterboxing where you don't use a gps but descriptions, map references and compass bearings. On lundy one of the caches was inside the cyl block of a ww2 heinkel that had crashed on the island, another at the top of the old lighthouse in the centre of the island

Nearest I can get to this with my own ideas
While I'm not totally against the idea of wandering about a ploughed field, it might not instantly supply the reward I seek,
also my patience in such matters is legendarily short.
Any hobbies need to offer almost instantaneous gratification or I get bored and move on,
woodwork surprisingly keeps my attention although whether thats the lure of wood glue or constant thrill of using sharp quickly moving power tools I'm unsure,

Re: Hobby needed
I recently tracked down a scythe after months of searching.
where as they do come up for sale all over the net (even disassembled they don't post well) so it had to be fairly local for collection,
fortunately one came up near by, and I fetched it last week.
Do have a bit of grass/verges to manage at field, and yearly restarting either of the strimmer's was a pain!
fancied a go with old technology as its supposedly therapeutic,
and I love the smell of cut grass.

good luck with the scythe, I tried one about 50 years ago nd could never get it to slice through the grass effortlessly as it has been claimed.zildjian wrote:I recently tracked down a scythe after months of searching.
