Apollo mounting on an l200 (old shape)

Post: # 1189Post richc

Right now I have the camper and have seen how Apollo stepped it on then I really need to do something about this

The front is thru the leg supports but then just onto the pickup body

The rear is even worse, Round the step mount and then onto the towbar. the towbar is a good place to go but not the step even if it is re-enforced.

I'll take some photos so we can put the collective borg mind together on the best way of doing this on my l200

Need to see picture how Apollo did the fronts,

I DO actually pass a cargo strap upwards from
eyebolt on bed floor>through their actual steel hoop intended as tie down>and then into a cargo ratchet on a removable plate
(designed to bolt to leg support bracket as it's a handy accessible substantial tie down)

if I used the designated point it means removing seating cushions and access panels and fumbling around with a turnbuckle one-handed out of sight ( and in any case they always unwind on the road)

rears however are as designed turn b's down to eyebolts

step-to-towbar sounds rubbish don't trust that

Unfortunately we've demounted our Apollo from the L200 as it needs some rot repair underneath and then it will be going on a VW Amarok (which has arrived!). Otherwise I'd post a pic of how it attached to ours.

When we collected it, we ratched-strapped the front through the leg supports onto the pickup bed lashing points nearest the cab, then down to the chassis - there are 2 holes in the frame just inside the rear wheels, and tucked the straps down between the bed and the cab.

The rear went through the leg supports onto the truck step brackets where they attach to the chassis. (We tried around each end of the step and tow bar but it started to bend when the straps were pulled tight.) Seemed secure enough at the back doing that, driving through London residential with all the speedbumps :o

So the front leg supports again Rich,
Its a good solid point usually and actually (I was going to say about going between tub and cab as well) if you can go down and find a hole or bracket on the chassis that's better still,
at the back I used to be able to go between dropped tailgate & tub down onto towbar bracket as it was full width which again was strong point

Can you get hold of 4 ratchet straps BTW

Not those rubbish small ones Halfords sell, they are pressed out of tin and wont hold anything

In fact Rich, if your near a builders merchants Travis/Wickes someone like that, they often sell a medium size strap set
less than a commercial truck but much more than Halfords, and these are ideal

usually around a tenner each last ones I saw :D

Machine Mart is the best place for heavy duty ratchet straps & they don't cost the earth ;)

Interesting, well Zildjian is coming up on saturday, I'm off to find if my usual fiixng supplier sells eyebolts

The ratchets apollo supplies are narrower than those at machine mart. I'll try and take some photos tomorrow , been a bit busy this week with mots etc, the old isuzu failed badly so a man is coming to collect it tomorrow and give me 700 squid, not quite enough to pay the welding bill on the iveco damn

Eye bolts

So what size/rating do folks use, I'm an overspec it type of guy so looking at 20mm bolts (rated 1-2 tonnes each)

Hi, I'm a bit absent from the site at present due to technical issues, but agree with over engineering concept.
Search ebay or visit a lifting specialist and order M12 stainless eye bolts - sometimes called dynamo bolts - and buy or get made the biggest spreader plates possible for the underside of the buck.
