Awning fixings

I picked up one of these simple roll out awning . The legs can either stand on the ground or go into sockets fitted the the vehicle. I can't fit mine to the back so will have to go on the side . Has anyone else got one on the side and fitted the sockets to the truck rather than the camper ? They would be too high on the camper .
