Wiring A USB socket

Sooo, there is currently no power in the bed area of the van, so I'm thinking of adding a car usb port, such as this...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01EMZ ... L&ref=plSr

However the only wiring loom is for the 12v lighting circuit.

Anyone forsee issues with tapping into that? It'd put everything nicely hidden under the false bottom of a cupboard.

Ta in advance.

Im presuming you mean wiring in to the camper. Do you not have a 12v socket wired to the camper battery?

Hi

There is a couple of 3pin 240v (Running, I assume from either the hookup or an inverter) and one 12v round cigarette lighter type socket. However this 12v socket is by the door and at the other end of the camper to the bed where I would like to have some power. I could plug into one of the 3 pins but that is not especially close, and it seems stoopid to invert to 240 to then have it stepped down to 5v to charge a phone or sic.

The question was could I wire a 12v usb socket designed to wire into a car dash panel into the 12v lighting circuit?

I could run a wire from the battery or 12v socket to the same place but that would very very involved compared to tapping into the lighting loom which is just where I want the power already.

I appreciate the original post wasn't super clear

D.

In theory a usb socket should supply about 2.5 watts, which is less than a conventional 12v bulb, so your lighting circuit should have the capacity to cope.
The right thing to do would be wire it to the fuse board on a separate circuit, but as you have found, that is a bigger job.
Because you are using a socket intended for a car dashboard, does it have a switch? In a car you might normally wire it via the ignition so that it is only live with the car turned on. In the camper, if you have it wired without a switch it may have a slight current draw even when not in use.

Thanks guys

I'll have a little think about it. A switch definitely seems a good idea, but in principal it should be OK.

if not an actual switch maybe an inline fuse you could pop out over winter at least
