My truck has a combined roller shutter and roll bar arrangement that is hugely heavy and awkward to lift off. So I've used an engine hoist and straps. It's still awkward, but at least I can do it on my own.

It lifts the canopy from the inside but I had to build up the height of the tool box on timber as the lift does not lower completely on to the floor.

exd"]so does that jack up the canopy from inside, or lift it from above with a strap or something?[/quote]

I looked at engine hoists but they lift from above I was lucky to spot this on e bay. I have a picture from the makers of this somewhere don`t know if they are still in production, I will try to sort it out & take a photo of it might give you an idea of how to adapt yours

Wonder if its easier to have one lower with a wide spreader to lift against the roof inside canopy instead
wide so canopy wouldn't readily topple off, low enough to drop canopy on ground out of use

The way you have drawn the lift is almost exactly the same as the design on the one I have the only thing is mine does not lower onto the ground it only lowers to 3 feet from the ground the design stops it going any further. I have to put it onto the other lift I have & move it around that way.

For the hardtop that I had on a jeep, I made a hoist to pull it up to the garage roof. It hung over the bonnet when driving in forwards. The pickup only just squeezes into the garage so there's not room to do it with the roller shutter and roll ar on the Amarok, so I've gone with an engine hoist. I only bought a one ton hoist, but with the extension that I've had to put on th arm, I wish I'd gone for a two ton one now. Seems to work though.

Looks like a nice sized garage Have you thought of a pallet lift. If I had a larger garage I would use a fork lift or pallet lift & replace the forks with a platform similar to the drawing you have made standing against the wall you were reversing toward with the door open on the top & reverse under the lift then lift it off .The arm could be made to come off when not needed
All that you would need to do is change the lifting system as these are lifted from a handle at the rear

Here's how I do it.
